Resume Writing Workshop: Caregivers Returning to the Workforce

Writing successful resumes for the modern automated screening paradigm has become a challenge for most professionals because it requires both enhanced resume writing and keyword optimization skills, which are niche skill sets few possess. That challenge is heightened for caregivers who have been without or partially employed during their time caring for family members.

Old school chronological resumes are no longer adequate for illustrating a candidate’s qualifications. In addition to their inability to present the necessary information, chronological format is prejudicial to entire categories of candidate, particularly caregivers returning to the workforce who have genuinely marketable skills that can be overlooked due to their gap in employment.

This creates a disconnect between companies and qualified candidates, and an unnecessary hardship for families who have already had to manage without the caregiver’s income for a substantial time.

Resume Workshop Purpose

Teach adults returning to the workforce how to craft a resume that appropriately highlights their marketable skill sets, de-emphasizes interrupted and/or nontraditional employment histories, and incorporates keywords most likely to enhance automated screening system relevance scores.

Resume Workshop Audience

Caregivers returning to the workforce, including: parents of small children, caregivers for the elderly and disabled, care coordinators for disabled veterans

Resume Workshop Format

The class is a 90 minute presentation / discussion format.

Materials would include a slide presentation. Topics would include a general discussion of the type of information that needs to go in their resume, how to address the issues specific to their needs, and concrete examples of the type of content most relevant to the audience.

Take Aways

Attendees will be provided with a copy of the slides including all sample content presented, a clean copy of my proprietary template so they may create their own documents, and an annotated sample document that mirrors the presentation material to help them apply it to their own personal experience.

Class Participation Options

Advance Questions

Registrants may email specific questions regarding their own resume drafts ahead of time so I can work them into the discussion.

Advance Personal Drafts

Ideally, registrants will have rough drafted their own resumes prior to class. I strongly recommended they bring a copy and make notes on it during the discussion regarding changes they want to make. It’s a valuable exercise in identifying the information they have versus the information they need.
